Fully accessible Ontario by 2025

The purpose of the Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005, is to achieve a fully accessible Ontario by 2025. To achieve this, the Ministry of Community and Social Services is developing accessibility standards and providing means to enforce the following standards:
  • Customer Service
  • Built Environment
  • Employment
  • Information and Communication* (draft has been prepared)
  • Transportation
The Customer Service Standard was approved July 2007 and municipalities must comply by January 2010.

The key factors to implementing Customer Service standards are:
  • Developing Policies, Practices & Procedures (dignity, independence, integration, equal opportunity & respect)
  • Service animals (guide dogs, etc.), support persons (fee or no fee for support persons in attending events, etc.) & other assistive devices (larger print, walker, wheelchair etc.)
  • Provision of notice of disruption of service
  • Training - requirements & content - how to identify disabilities & how to interact
  • Establishing a system for feedback
  • Compliance and reporting
