Re: Township State of Emergency Due to Ice Storm – Update #6
Hydro Update
Hydro One continues to work diligently to restore power to the 3500 remaining households still without. This work includes replacing broken hydro poles. Hydro One has additional resources assisting with restoration from New Brunswick, Saskatchewan, and Northern Ontario.
Warming and Information Centre
The S.G. Nesbitt Memorial Arena/Community Centre remains set up as a warming and information centre, currently open 24 hours a day. The Warming Centre offers shower facilities, food, as well spots for charging devices. Red Cross has provided 50 sleeping cots/pillow and blankets for anyone that needs a warm place to sleep.
Safety Reminders
• Water Safety:
Water levels remain high. Please stay away from lakes, rivers, and streams as water is moving quickly.
• No Daytime Burning:
There is no daytime burning in Haliburton County as per O.Reg.207/96 Outdoor Fires of the Forest Fires Prevention Act, R.S.O. 1990, c.F.24. As Minden Hills is under a state of emergency, additional calls for burn complaints would cause unnecessary stress on strained resources.
• Generator and Carbon Monoxide:
Carbon Monoxide (CO) poisoning from generators is a critical danger during power outages. Please make sure you’re taking the proper precautions to protect yourself and your loved ones during times of emergency.
• Flooding Roads:
Due to heavy rainfall and high-water levels, roads may be impacted. Some areas may become impassable, and conditions hazardous. Avoid driving through flooded areas as conditions may be unstable and dangerous. Use alternate routes when possible and drive with extreme caution in wet conditions.
Brush and Property Clean up
Please do not place brush from your private property onto the shoulder of the roads. This creates a safety hazard. Please take your brush to the Scotch Line Landfill or arrange to have it taken.
To support Minden Hills residents in cleanup efforts after the recent ice storm, we are waiving disposal fees until further notice. Brush will be accepted at the Scotch Line Landfill only during this time, as this site can accommodate large quantities.
The Township’s Emergency Control Group (ECG), including key partners and service providers, are continuing to meet daily.
We thank residents for their patience and cooperation.
