The Township of Minden Hills is seeking a motivated and energetic individual to join our Public Works Department as the Waste Facilities Lead Hand. Reporting to the Manager of Waste Facilities, this position plays a key role in supporting the daily operations and maintenance of the Township’s waste disposal sites.
The Waste Facilities Lead Hand works collaboratively with other Waste Management staff to ensure the safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible operation of all waste facilities, while maintaining compliance with applicable regulations and Township standards.
This is a full-time, union position. Hours are forty-two (42) hours/week. Hours of work will be 6:00 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday to Thursday and 6:00 AM to 12:30 PM on Fridays. The current rate of pay is $30.72/hour as per the LOCAL 4286 CUPE Collective Agreement. Earnings will be subject to Union dues.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Grade 12 or equivalent.
- A minimum of three (3) years’ recent experience in a Municipal waste environment, including some supervisory experience, is required.
- A minimum of two (2) years’ experience operating the following is required; backhoe, excavator, loader, roll-off truck, tandem axle truck, single axle truck, pick-up with plow.
- Possession and ability to keep a valid “DZ” Driver’s License is required.
- Certifications and training from Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) or equivalent, or willingness to obtain, is required.
- Ability to perform general equipment and building maintenance is required.
- A solid understanding of waste facility operations and maintenance procedures along with the ability to identify construction and maintenance deficiencies is required.
- Knowledge of Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks regulations.
- Knowledge of job specific hazards and applicable safety rules.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to effectively multi-task.
- Strong and effective communication skills with a demonstrated ability to provide excellent customer service.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act.
- Valid standard First Aid & CPR/AED certification is an asset.
- Chainsaw training is an asset.
- Demonstrated high level of initiative, work performance, and responsibility in the performance of duties.
Work Environment:
This position involves working alone at times, driving, and performing outdoor duties in varying weather conditions with potential environmental hazards. The role also involves regular exposure to dirt, dust, grease, and potentially hazardous materials, and may include some office work.
Selection Process:
Upon final selection, the successful applicant will be required to provide, at their own expense, a Criminal Record and Judicial Matters check from the Ontario Provincial Police or appropriate police force as well as a clean Driver’s Abstract.
