Subject: Upcoming Programs and Activities at the Minden Hills Cultural Centre in August

The Minden Hills Museum & Heritage Village and Nature’s Place continues to offer exciting and fun drop-in programming activities in August, 2024. We are open Tuesday to Saturday between 10 am – 4 pm. Pre-registration is not required, and admission is by donation. All ages are welcome for all the activities, unless specified.

Heritage Programs and Activities

Butter in a Jar & Ice Cream Making: Make butter and ice cream the old-fashioned way! Spoiler alert: there will be work! Butter in a Jar starts at 11 a.m. every Tuesday (Aug. 6, 13, 20 & 27), and Ice Cream making starts every Friday (Aug. 9, 16, 23 & 30) at 2 p.m.

Learning Cursive: Cursive can be beautiful and fun to learn. Join us at the heritage schoolhouse to learn cursive writing and become a pro! Available on August 10 and 24 at 11 a.m.

Crocheting a Square: Explore the history of crocheting and learn to crochet a square.  Suitable for ages 5 to 14. All materials are provided. Available on August 17 and 31 at 2 p.m.

Early Settler Baking: Join us in the Bowron House’s kitchen for a demonstration of traditional early settler baking techniques and taste the authentic flavors of recipes from the early days. Available on Thursday, August 15 from 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.

Traveling Doctor’s Bag: Come join us for a fascinating look inside an early traveling doctor's bag and discover the medical tools and practices of early settlers. Available on Wednesday, August 7 & 21 from 2 - 3 p.m.

Laundry Day: Scrub! Scrub! Scrub! Come check out how laundry was done over 100 years ago! Available on Thursday, August 22 at 2 p.m.

Multilingual Schoolhouse: In the instructor-led beginner classes every Wednesday morning, learn basic greetings and simple expressions in a different language in our historic schoolhouse. No language level is required. Available every Wednesday in August (7, 14, 21 & 28) from 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. 

Nature and Science Programs and Activities

Experiments with Science: Let's get messy and conduct your own experiment! Take part in a volcanic eruption simulation at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, August 13, or create your own Oobleck mixture with cornstarch on Tuesday, August 27 at 2 p.m.

Rock Painting: Ready to rock the world with your artistic skills? Or are you just here for a Zen rock painting session? Come join us and show us what you can do with rocks! Available on August 6 and 29 at 2 p.m.

Tie Dye 101: Discover cool designs that you can do on fabric with tie-dye. Bring a plain T-shirt or a handkerchief. Available on August 31 at 11 a.m.

Exploring Climate Change: Our world has been experiencing drastic environmental changes in recent decades. Learn some key concepts of this global phenomenon and how you can help! Available on August 10 at 2 p.m. and on August 29 at 11 a.m.

Bottle Music: In this fun and interactive session, we will transform ordinary bottles into extraordinary instruments and create captivating melodies together! Available on Wednesday, August 14 and 28 at 2 p.m.

Toddler Discovery Zone: Toddler-friendly (1-6 years old) drop-in activities each Friday morning (10 a.m. – 12 p.m.) allow your little ones to explore and discover through engaging sensory experiences. Available every Friday in August (9, 16, 23 & 30) at 11 a.m. Don’t forget to stop by the Family Storytime held by the library - Minden Branch (10:15 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. every Friday).

*New* Robo Coding: Join and learn basic concepts of coding and algorithms by programming instructions that can be acted out. Children of all ages are welcome. Available on Thursday August 8 & 22 at 11 a.m.
