Subject: Drop-in Programs and Activities at the Minden Hills Cultural Centre coming up in July 2025

The Minden Hills Museum & Heritage Village and Nature’s Place will be offering unique and exciting drop-in programming activities and events throughout July. All drop-in programs will be offered at 11 a.m., unless otherwise noted. We are open Tuesday to Saturday between 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Pre-registration is not required, and admission is by donation. All materials will be provided. All ages are welcome.

Heritage Workshops:

  • Traveling Doctor: Come examine Dr. Agnes Jamieson’s medical kit and discover what early traveling doctors carried when taking care of their patients. Tuesday, July 2.
  • One Room Schoolhouse: Learn about school subjects, daily routines, and student life in earlier days in our one-room schoolhouse. Tuesday, July 8.
  • Edu Kit: Baking: Explore historic baking tools and artifacts from kitchens of the early 1900s. Thursday, July 10.
  • Laundry: Discover how laundry was done 100 years ago — by hand, with old-fashioned tools. Thursday, July 17.
  • Croquet: Challenge a friend to this classic lawn game. Saturday, July 19.
  • Early Settler Baking: Explore early settler baking recipes and watch a baking demonstration in the Bowron House. Tuesday, July 22.
  • Tin Punch Craft: Mimic early settler art using simple tools and materials to punch patterns. Thursday, July 24.
  • Stitching a Fabric Collage: Design a small fabric collage using vintage-style scraps and simple hand-stitching techniques. Tuesday, July 29,
  • Butter in a Jar / Ice Cream Making: Experience early dairy traditions with basic ingredients. Butter in a Jar Fridays, July 4 & 18 @ 2 pm.  Ice Cream making Fridays, July 11 and August 1 @ 2 pm.

Crafty Hands:

  • Mini Scarecrow: Craft a scarecrow to scare off garden critters. Saturday, July 5.
  • Bookmark Laminating: Create your own bookmark and take it home.  Saturday, July 12.
  • Coil and Create: Use clay to craft a coiled snake decorated with your own unique patterns.  Wednesday, July 16.
  • Lino Print Making: Try Lino printmaking and create your own art piece.  Saturday, July 26.
  • Bracelet Making: Make a bracelet on International Friendship Day. A fun way to celebrate creativity and friendship. Wednesday, July 30.
  • Cardboard Loom: Weave yarn on a simple cardboard frame.  Thursday, July 31.

Curious Minds:

  • No-bake Salt Dough: Make shapes with no-bake salt dough and take it home.  Thursday, July 3.
  • What’s in the Garden?: Can you identify the garden plants? Some are the very ingredients on your table.  Wednesday, July 9.
  • Bird Song Detective: Use our interactive tool to test your ears and learn to identify common bird calls heard on site.  Tuesday, July 15.
  • Oobleck Slime: Discover Oobleck — Both a liquid and a solid!  Wednesday, July 23.
  • Melting Crayons: Explore how melted crayons and wax paper create vibrant art with the help of an iron.  Saturday, August 2.

Toddler Discovery Zone:

Every Friday at 11 a.m., a toddler-friendly craft or program is available at Nature’s Place. Please feel free to drop in. Toddlers can explore, play, and discover through different fun activities!

Heritage Passport:

Pick up a Heritage Passport when you visit our site! Created in partnership with My Haliburton Highlands, earn a stamp each time you participate in any of our daily drop-in programs or special events between July 2 and August 30, 2025. Collect 6 stamps to win one free Kawartha Dairy Ice Cream Cone. Collect 12 stamps to be entered in a draw for a $50 gift certificate for a local business.
