Entrance and Wide Load Permits

Entrance Permits

Entrance permits are required when:

  • you are constructing a new entrance from a municipal road onto private property, or;
  • you wish to construct a building on a property where an entrance already exists, but you do not have record of an approved entrance permit.

Note: where an entrance already exists, it is up to the property owner to provide proof of the approved entrance permit in order to obtain a building permit.

First, determine who maintains your road.

If you are on a Township Road:

Review our Minimum Standards for Entrances – Policy 22 to determine whether you will qualify.

  1. Acquire a contractor and obtain a copy of their insurance as described in Policy 22
  2. If you are doing the work yourself, obtain the insurance described in Policy 22
  3. Complete the application below
  4. Submit a copy of your insurance
  5. Submit your payment following the instruction in the fees section of this page
  6. The Township will contact you within 3 business days of receiving your payment to confirm the next steps with you

Active Permit

  1. Once you have submitted payment, you will have 6 months to complete the work
  2. When you have constructed your entrance, request an initial inspection
  3. A Township inspector will attend and either approve your entrance or provide direction on how to bring it up to standard
  4. Complete all required work to bring the entrance up to standard
  5. When you are sure that you have completed all requirements to make the driveway compliant with Policy 22, request a final inspection
  6. After final inspection, you will receive your entrance permit, or a notice that your entrance has not passed inspection

If you are unsure whether you would qualify:

If you are unsure whether you would qualify, you can obtain an opinion of entrance from the Township by paying the application fee, but not the deposit. The Township will review the location and advise whether an entrance would qualify in the location you are proposing. This way, if your entrance would not pass, you would not lose your deposit. If the Township feels you could proceed in your location, you must pay the deposit to proceed with your application. You will still be required to construct the entrance in accordance with Policy 22 to get your deposit back.

Permit Expiry

Once you have submitted your payment, you have 6 months to obtain a final inspection.

If your permit expires before you complete the work, you may renew for an additional 6 month period by paying the current application fee (you do not have to pay the deposit again). At the end of the extension, the permit cannot be renewed. The deposit will be lost and the process will start over.

Permit Cancellation

If the work is not complete prior to the 6 month expiry date, and no extension is requested, the permit will be cancelled and the deposit will not be refunded.

Re-Inspection

If the entrance does not pass final inspection and there is still time left on the permit, a re-inspection may be requested for a fee.

Winter

The Township does not conduct inspections once there is snow on the ground, so please consider this when planning your work.

Deposit Refund

Deposits are refunded upon issuance of an entrance permit. If the Township needs to repair damage to municipal infrastructure caused by the entrance, costs will be drawn from the deposit.

Annual

If you plan to move over-dimensional loads more than six times per year, choose this permit
