Public Works Labourer
We are currently seeking an energetic and motivated individual to join our Public Works team as a Labourer. This new position plays an important role in supporting the maintenance and operation of municipal roads and infrastructure throughout the Township.
Reporting to the Roads Operations Manager, the Labourer provides service and a variety of maintenance and construction activities, snow/ice removal (snowplowing, snow blowing, snow shoveling), maintenance and repair services to roads, bridges, culverts, drainage and other road works maintenance for the Public Works Department.
This is a Union position based on a forty-two (42) hour work week. Work hours are subject to seasonal adjustments as follows:
- Summer Schedule (typically May to mid-October), Monday to Thursday
- Winter Schedule (typically mid-October to April), Wednesday to Sunday
The current rate of pay is $27.22 per hour, in accordance with the LOCAL 4286 Collective Agreement – Schedule “A.” Earnings are subject to applicable Union dues.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Grade 12.
- Minimum of 9 months experience in a related position is required.
- A general knowledge of vehicles, equipment and materials used in the Roads Department sheds/buildings/office is required.
- Demonstrated good communication and public relation skills.
- Possession of and ability to keep a valid “DZ” Driver’s Licence, or ability to obtain, is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- A good understanding of all policies, procedures, by-laws, Ministry guidelines, regulations and legislation related to the operation of road equipment, construction and maintenance.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Outlook (email).
The following are considered Assets for the position:
- Pickup truck snowplowing training
- Surface Miner Training Certificate
- Certificate in Ontario Traffic Manual Book 7
- Chainsaw Training
- Valid Standard First Aid & CPR/AED certification
The position requires the operation of equipment including a pickup with snowplow and undertaking of construction and maintenance projects in extreme weather conditions as well as moderate to heavy physical demands related to manual labour with regular exposure to dirt, dust, oil, grease, noise, vibration, weather conditions, hazardous materials and chemicals.
Applicants may be required to complete written, practical and/or technical testing as part of the interview process.
Upon final selection, the successful applicant will be required to provide, at their own expense, a Criminal Record and Judicial Matters check from the Ontario Provincial Police or appropriate police force as well as a clean Driver’s Abstract.
