Nominations

Nominations open Monday May 2, 2022 and Nomination Day is Friday August 19, 2022.

Individuals who wish to run for the office of Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Councillor at Large or Councillor, or for School Board Trustee(s), may file nomination papers starting Monday, May 2, 2022. The final day to file nomination papers is Friday, August 19, 2022, between 9:00 AM and 2:00 PM. 

Offices Available for Nomination

Nominations can be made for the positions listed below. All nominations must be made on the prescribed forms and must include signatures of at least 25 persons (eligible electors within your municipality) endorsing the nomination on the prescribed form.

School Board Trustees are excluded from the 25 signature requirement.

Municipal Council:

  • (1) Mayor
  • (1) Deputy Mayor
  • (1) Councillor at Large
  • (2) Ward One Councillors
  • (1) Ward Two Councillor
  • (1) Ward Three Councillor

School Board Trustees

  • (1) School Board Trustee for the English Public Trillium Lakelands District School Board. Nominations to be filed with the Clerk at the Municipality of Dysart et al
  • (1) School Board Trustee for the French Public Conseille, Conseil Scolaire Viamonde. Nominations are to be filed with the Clerk at the City of Oshawa or your local municipality.

Filing Your Nomination

All Nomination forms must be filed, either in person or by your agent, with the Clerk/Returning Officer. Please call or email ahead of time to confirm the availability of Staff or to make an appointment.

The following Nomination Paper (Form 1) and Endorsement of Nomination (Form 2) may be completed and brought to the Clerk/Returning Officer at the time of filing.

Adobe Acrobat Reader version 10.0 or above is required to view/print these forms. 

Nomination Filing Fees

The required filing fees are:

  • Head of Council $200.00
  • All other offices $100.00

Accepted methods of payment are: cash, debit, certified cheque or money order made payable to the Corporation of the Township of Minden Hills, and must accompany the signed forms. Full details on the procedures to be followed may be obtained from the Municipal Clerk.

Frequently Asked Questions

 What is the term of Council? 
 The term of Council and School Board Trustee is four years.
 What are the requirements to run for Council? 
 A person is qualified to be elected or hold office, who, as of the day they file their nomination is:
  • Entitled to be an elector under MEA, s.17
    • Is a Canadian citizen;
    • Is at least 18 years of age;
    • Resides in the local municipality, or is the owner or tenant of land in the local municipality, or the spouse of such a person; and
    • Is not prohibited from voting as noted or otherwise, by law
  • Not disqualified for violation of financial requirements or violations of requirements for filing financial information.
  • Not disqualified by any Act from holding such office.
  • Not disqualified under the provisions as outlined in MEA s.90(2) and 91(1).
 What would disqualify me from running for Council?
 The following persons are disqualified from running for Municipal Council:
  • Except in accordance with MEA, s.30 (Leave of Absence), an employee of the municipality or a person who is not an employee of the municipality, but who is the Clerk, Treasurer, Integrity Commissioner, Auditor General, Ombudsman or registrar referred to in s.223.11 of the Municipal Act or an investigator referred to in s.239.2(1) of the municipality or a person who is not an employee of the municipality, but who holds any administrative position of the municipality.
  • A judge of any court.
  • A Senator, a Member of Parliament, a Member of Provincial Parliament.
  • A person who is serving a sentence of imprisonment in a penal or correctional institution, including a sentence being served in the evening or on weekends (this does not include a person serving a sentence at home).
  • A corporation.
  • A person acting as executor or trustee or in any other representative capacity.
  • A person who was convicted of the corrupt practices described in MEA, s.90(3) if Voting Day in the current election is less than 5 years after Voting Day in the election in respect of which he or she was convicted.
  • A person disqualified for violations of financial requirements or violations of requirements for filing financial information.

It is the responsibility of each candidate to ensure that they are not disqualified from being nominated for the office.

If not satisfied, the Clerk will reject the nomination and, as soon as possible, give notice to the person who sought to be nominated and to all other candidates for that office. The Clerk’s decision to certify or reject a nomination is final.

 How do I file my nomination?
A person can only become a candidate during the Nomination Period. The Nomination Period Starts on Monday May 2, 2022 and end on Friday August 19, 2022 at 2:00 PM. Potential candidates are requested to make an appointment to ensure availability of staff to receive their nomination.

Nominations must be filed on the prescribed form (PR FORM 1) and are to be filed with the Clerk, or designate, at the Municipal Administration Office in the following manner:

  • In person or through an agent
  • During regular office hours at the Clerk’s Office from May 2, 2022 to August 18, 2022 and between 9:00 AM and 2:00 PM on Friday, August 19, 2022 (Nomination Day)
  • With the prescribed declaration by at least 25 persons endorsing the nomination who are eligible electors within the township
  • With the prescribed nomination filing fee of $200.00 for Head of Council and $100 for all other offices - the filing fee shall be paid by cash, debit card, certified cheque or money order payable to the Township of Minden Hills
  • With proof of identity and residence as prescribed in O. Reg. 304/13, as amended (must be valid ID containing the candidate’s name, qualifying address and signature)
 Can I submit my nomination electronically? 

Nominations must be filed in person with the Municipal Clerk/Returning Officer. 

If a person is present at the Clerk’s Office on Nomination Day to file a nomination, they must make their presence known to the Clerk prior to 2:00 PM. Nomination papers will not be accepted after the deadline. The date and time of filing are to be filled in by the Clerk and initialed by the candidate or his/her agent.
