Release # 26-27

Subject: Notice of Wastewater Treatment Plant Bypass

The Minden Sewage Treatment System is currently receiving higher than normal flows due to the extreme wet weather and snow melt. The amount of wastewater entering the sewer system has exceeded the capacity of the system. OCWA as the Township’s Wastewater Operator commenced bypass procedures.

Beginning at approximately 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, sewage had to be pumped to the Gull River from the Sewage Pumping Station 1- Orde Street located at 27 Orde Street in Minden. This spill was initiated to reduce the risk of sewage backups into private property. The impact of the sewage spill on the water quality will be minimal given the dilution from the significant rainfall event, however residents drawing water downstream of the Orde Street Sewage Pumping Station should take precautions.

Lakelands Public Health advises residents who draw their water from the Gull River to use proper filtration and disinfection system before consuming the water. Surface water can be contaminated by viruses, bacteria or parasites that can causes illness. Although precaution should be taken during the spill event, it is always important to ensure that surface water is properly treated before drinking or using to be sure it is safe.

Homes and businesses connected to municipal water from the Minden Drinking Water System are not affected and their water continues to be safe to drink.

Updates regarding this bypass event will be posted on the Township website, please visit www.mindenhills.ca for updates.
