No Daytime Burning Allowed

Burn permits are required to burn during the day from April 1 to October 31. Burning is allowed from 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM unless restrictions are in place.

Being a Minden Hills Volunteer Firefighter requires dedication, commitment, respect, integrity and courage. Our volunteer firefighters dedicate a large amount of time for both training and responding to emergency incidents. Your safety and that of your fellow firefighters, including the public, depends on the skills you will learn and more importantly maintain and improve. Volunteer firefighters are on call 365 days a year (including holidays), 24 hours a day, and 7 days a week.

Duties and Expectations

As a firefighter with the Township of Minden Hills Fire Department, you will be participating in several areas of fire department operations:

  • fire suppression
  • extrication at motor vehicle accidents
  • first aid (including CPR and Automated External Defibrillation)
  • fire prevention
  • public education and awareness
  • fire truck and equipment cleaning and maintenance
  • fire hall and truck bay cleaning and maintenance
  • regular and specialized training
  • regular meeting nights

Becoming a Volunteer Firefighter

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Have a minimum grade twelve (12) Highschool Diploma or equivalent
  • be legally able to work in Canada
  • Have a valid minimum “DZ” Ontario driver's license, or successfully obtain within the first year of your hiring date
  • Must pass a health and medical check, and fitness assessment
  • Must have a permanent home within 25 kilometers of the Fire Station
  • Must be able to respond to a variety of calls during varying times of the day including daytime, evenings, overnight and weekends
  • Must be able to attend required training on Monday nights; and to complete a mandatory training program
  • Will be assigned to a duty crew roster and be on-call for a rotation shift, ensuring that the minimum available personnel are able to assist for calls,
  • Must maintain a minimum of 70% attendance for training and 30% attendance for calls

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous related experience and/or training
  • First Aid/CPR and Defibrillator certification training

Mandatory Training Requirements

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001 Standards for Professional Qualifications for Firefighter level one outlines the skills that a volunteer firefighter will achieve during recruit training. It is mandatory for all recruits that are not certified as a 1001 level 1 Firefighter to receive and be certified to this level within the first year on the department.
