Become a Volunteer Firefighter

The Township of Minden Hills relies on volunteer firefighters to provide essential fire protection services to the public and its local communities. If you are 18 years or older, are interested in the fire services or giving back to your community, have excellent teamwork skills, can commit to training and emergency calls, and would like to be part of a dedicated team of individuals, then we invite you to apply.

How to Apply

Applications can be submitted online using the Volunteer Firefighter Online Application Form, or are available at the Administration Office during regular business hours.

When openings become available, applications will be reviewed and successful application candidates will be invited to interview and will be required to provide, at their own expense, a Vulnerable Sector check from the Ontario Provincial Police or appropriate Police Force and a Driver’s Abstract.

Successful candidates will serve a one (1) year probationary period. During the probationary period, the applicant must obtain a "D" Class driver’s license with "Z" Endorsement for air brakes, as well as up to date first aid and CPR certificates. It is strongly recommended that vaccinations are up to date including Hepatitis B vaccination.

Firefighter Duties

As a firefighter for the Township of Minden Hills you will be required to perform various duties under emergency conditions, frequently involving considerable hazards. Work will also include routine duties in the maintenance of firefighting vehicles, equipment, and fire department facilities. Those applying must be capable of functioning as part of a group and under adverse conditions.

As a firefighter with the Township of Minden Hills Fire Department, you will be participating in several areas of fire department operations:

  • fire suppression
  • extrication at motor vehicle accidents
  • first aid (including CPR and Automated External Defibrillation)
  • fire prevention
  • public education and awareness
  • fire truck and equipment cleaning and maintenance
  • fire hall and truck bay cleaning and maintenance
  • regular and specialized training
  • regular meeting nights
 Requirements
  • 24-hour availability is a priority
  • Current CPR and First Aid
  • Previous Fire Fighting experience an asset
  • Preference will be given to those with a valid province of Ontario DZ driver’s license (DZ will be required to pass probationary period)
  • Must be 18 years of age or over
  • Must live and/or work in the Township of Minden Hills
  • Regular attendance and participation in training sessions to develop & maintain skills as per Departmental standards & requirements including NFPA or any other pertinent requirements (i.e.: standards, legislation, or programs)
 Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous related experience and/or training
  • First Aid/CPR and Defibrillator certification training
 Mandatory Training Requirements
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001 Standards for Professional Qualifications for Firefighter level one outlines the skills that a volunteer firefighter will achieve during recruit training. It is mandatory for all recruits that are not certified as a 1001 level 1 Firefighter to receive and be certified to this level within the first year on the department.
